Locarno and its old town

We present a walk through the old town of Locarno.

We start from the Piazza Grande, the city's landmark, with its typical cobblestone pavement and parquet, a pedestrian area and the heart of the city, among old buildings and modern events such as Moon & Star and the Locarno Film Festival.

We now head for the Visconti Castle, whose first historical references date back to 998 and which was much larger before the demolitions in 1531. It now houses the civic and archaeological museum and the commemorative hall, which was the venue for the Locarno Peace Conference in 1925.
We now enter the heart of the Old Town, characterised by old buildings, narrow streets and beautiful courtyards. Because of the difference in height between the Piazza Grande and this district, it can be difficult to climb up into the Old Town - we recommend climbing up from the car park located near the roundabout using the lift and the new footbridge.
Visit the Piazzetta delle Corporazioni and take in the atmosphere of the Cittadella and S. Antonio streets.

The square and the church of S. Antonio with its altar of the dead Christ are also worth a visit.

Now head for the Casa del Negromante, a typical Locarno mansion, and the Palazzo Morettini, which until a few years ago housed a cloistered convent.

Time required: allow at least 2 hours to enjoy the town and its monuments.
