The Monte Bré
One of the two mountains that surround the bay of Lugano is Mount Bré, which from its top offers a wonderful view of the Alps and Monte Rosa, as well as of course of Lake Lugano and Mount San Salvatore, at the other end of the gulf.
The summit of Bré can be reached by funicular during the season, which runs from March to the end of the year. It is still possible to visit the mountain taking advantage of the city bus no. 12, free of charge thanks to the Ticino Ticket for free public transport during the stay. Bus no. 12 takes you in about 30 minutes from the centre of Lugano to the picturesque village of Bré, which hosted many artists who have left interesting works in its streets.
From Mount Bré there are several hiking trails, the most popular of which is perhaps the one that leads to Gandria, a fishing village on the shores of the lake, from which a beautiful walk along the lake brings tourists back to the city. Alternatively, it is possible to return from Gandria by postbus.
And what are you waiting for? In Lugano there's a lot to do, even in winter!
